Juneteenth (a blend of “June” and “nineteenth”) is a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, ensuring that the last enslaved people in the nation were finally declared free.
